Principal's Message

Dear Island Avenue Families,

Welcome to Island Avenue School, where our classrooms are buzzing with activity and each day brings new opportunities for growth and learning.

And what does a day at Island Avenue look like? For all of our students, it includes literacy instruction during Readers and Writers Workshop, when Island learners develop the skills and capacities to support a lifetime of reading and writing. Math is also an important part of each day, and our students use the district’s Bridges resources to develop a deep understanding of essential mathematical concepts.

Island students always enjoys Social Studies and Science, and they look forward to the many hands-on activities that support learning in these areas. These activities include inquiry lessons in the classroom and field trips to local sites such as the Bauer Park, Hammonasset State Beach, and the CT state capitol. Physical Education, Music, Art or Spanish are also a part of every school day at Island Avenue. During these ‘Specials’, students develop collaborative skills and personal talents through a variety of games, songs, and creative learning activities. And, of course, school wouldn’t be complete without lunch and recess, when students relax with friends and enjoy Island’s expansive playground, blacktop, and field areas.

Island Avenue School is a great place to grow and learn, and we’re so glad that you and your child are part of our community!

Sincerely,

Doreen O’Leary
Principal
