Guest Speaker Visits KHR

Last week Ryerson students had an incredible opportunity to listen to a Madison resident tell her family’s story of coming to America. Two Ryerson teachers (Mrs. Rene Chin and Mrs. Amber Maly-Bingham) are part of a committee working with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Community of Practice. This committee has been led and facilitated by Jenny Heikkila Diaz, a consultant for UConn. The presentation was taped and will be made available to educators who teach and who write AAPI curriculum.

Ms. Truc Diep shared her journey to America with a Grade 2 and Grade 3 classroom. She spoke with students about her family’s treacherous journey from Vietnam to Connecticut in 1980 and her memories of assimilating into the culture here. Throughout her story she shared with students the importance of showing kindness and including everyone regardless of where they come from. After her presentation students had an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about Vietnam and her families journey here.
