Brown Begins Blizzard of Giving

Last week Brown Intermediate School kicked off its fourth annual “Blizzard of Giving”, a holiday drive benefiting shoreline families. Everyone in the community - not just Brown families - is invited to donate.
Brown School Nurse Valerie Alberti organizes the drive. She said this drive is a little different than others because the school is only asking for monetary or gift card donations. She said the reason is because this drive is to benefit kids ages 11-18, an age group that is often largely forgotten by toy and gift drives.
“We are organizing for the teens who otherwise might not get something,” she said. “In that age group we have over 40 families we are trying to provide for.”
Donations of all sizes are welcome and the money and gift cards are handed over to Madison Youth and Family Services to be distributed across the shoreline. Suggested gift cards include: Stop and Shop, Big Y, CVS, Amazon, Cumberland Farms, Target, Dicks Sporting Goods, and Visa/MasterCard.
At Brown, in the spirit of community service and to promote altruism, students are encouraged to do chores around the house to earn contributions rather than just asking parents to buy a gift card or donate money. Once a student brings a donation into school, it becomes part of the “blizzard”.
“All of the donations come down here and then I fill out a snowflake and put it up in the cafeteria,” said Alberti. “For every person that donates I put the homeroom teachers name on the snowflake to the students can watch their snowflakes grow. So that is the blizzard of giving.”
The donation goal is $3,000 at minimum and $700 in donations came in the first week of the drive.
“Anyone can donate and that is very much welcomed,” she said. “I am so grateful for anything we get.”

The drive runs until Friday, December 13. Donations can be dropped off in person or mailed to:
