August 7, 2020
Dear Families and Colleagues,
I hope this communication finds you and your family well as we continue to live with COVID-19, and the aftermath of Tropical Storm Isaias.
As we prepare for our reopening on September 3, the district will be reopening with the hybrid model. This model was selected to attend to the safety of students, teachers and staff, and to promote their emotional well-being. The hybrid model provides an opportunity to have students, teachers and staff transition back to school in a controlled and managed setting. We believe a successful re-entry back to school will help the district to stay open longer and enable the district to return to full in-person classes in mid-October if the metrics in CT and Madison warrant the transition.
As noted in Madison Public Schools 2020-2021 Reopening Plan on pages 13-14, and 18-19, the hybrid model will divide each school’s population into two groups, Group A and Group B. Students in Group A, with a last name that begins with A-L, will typically attend school in person on Monday and Tuesday while students in Group B will participate in live streamed instruction at home. On Wednesday in a typical week, all students in both groups will participate in blended learning and small group sessions for distance learning. Again, in a typical five day school week, students in Group B with last names that begin M-Z, will attend school in person on Thursday and Friday, and students in Group A will participate in live streamed instruction at home.
Modification to the Hybrid Model for School Weeks Less Than Five Days
September 3 and 4
Four Day School Weeks During four day school weeks there will be two days of school for each group of students and no full day of distance learning for all students. The schedule for September will be as follows.
Week of September 7:
Week of September 28:
Reassessment of Hybrid Model
Parent Questionnaire The parent questionnaire will be available through Wednesday, August 12 and must be completed for each child enrolled in MPS. This questionnaire will assist the district in planning for students who will be in person for the hybrid model and those students who will temporarily optinto voluntary distance learning.
Temporarily Opting In to Voluntary Remote Learning Due to Covid-19 Parents who select this learning option for their child must read and acknowledge the Notice to Temporarily Opt In to Voluntary Remote Learning Due to COVID-19.
We realize the hybrid model may pose an inconvenience to some families and we are working with interested providers to secure licensed child care in our community. We will share information as it becomes available.
I will continue to provide school reopening updates and want to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as the district works through a myriad of details related to a safe and successful reopening.
Please help keep CT and Madison healthy and remember to wear a mask in public, wash hands frequently and practice social distancing.
Have an enjoyable weekend.
Very truly yours,
JeanAnn C. Paddyfote, Ph.D. Interim Superintendent of Schools
