 Dear Sophomore Parents:

Our records indicate that your daughter or son will be enrolling for classes for their junior year here at Hand.  As you guide them through this process, I’d like to inform you of an exciting program offered through our Career and Technology Education department.

College-Career Pathways is a program offered in conjunction with Gateway Community College that enables high school students to receive community college credit for completing a high school course whose curriculum has been aligned with a similar course at the community college.  In addition to the courses listed below, our English, Algebra II, and Science curricula are also aligned with their counterparts at Gateway.   If a student is registered for College-Career Pathways and receives a B- or better in the courses mentioned in this letter, he or she will receive up to 12 community college credits.  (Note:  students can only receive three credits for one Career and Technical Education course, although they may be enrolled in more than one.)  There is no fee to pay, no additional work to do, and no achievement test to take.

In order to register for College-Career Pathways, students must be enrolled in one of the Career and Technical Education courses listed below during their junior year.  They must also be enrolled in or plan to enroll in Algebra II and either Human Biology or Chemistry before they graduate from Hand.  The summer after graduation, students will receive an official transcript from Gateway Community CollegeThe credits earned can then be transferred to any Connecticut State University.  Most out-of-state public universities and some private colleges and universities also accept College-Career Pathways credits.

Students at Daniel Hand do not have to go to the Gateway campus at any time in order to participate in College-Career Pathways.  Registration takes place at the high school and enrollment is free.  I urge you to encourage your son or daughter to enroll in one of the following courses for their upcoming junior year:

  • Accounting
  • TV Production
  • Foods and Nutrition
  • Power and Energy
  • Advanced Power and Energy
  • Marketing I
  • Sports + Entertainment Marketing

If you have any questions, please email me at schultzw@madison.k12.ct.us.  I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Bill Schultz

College-Career Pathways Coordinator
