April 24, 2019 National Drug Take Back Day - April 27, 2019 Did you know that Connecticut is one of the top 10 states for opioid related overdose deaths?
As students on the Daniel Hand High School Class Council, we would like to take action to combat this alarming fact. We are coordinating with the Madison Police Department and Madison Youth and Family Services to raise awareness of the National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27, 2019.
There is a prescription drug drop box in the lobby of the Madison Police Department, located at 9 Campus Drive, which can be accessed 24 hours a day. The drop box allows for unused prescription drugs to be disposed of securely and properly. Flushing prescriptions down the toilet or discarding them in trash bins leads to the pollution of landfills and contamination of local water supplies, making these methods of disposal unsafe. As teenagers, it is especially important to us that drugs are disposed of in a responsible manner. If left in your home, extremely addictive prescriptions can lead to misuse and the endangerment of family members.
Class Council is raising awareness of the National Drug Take Back Day through daily announcements at Daniel Hand as well as posters displayed throughout the community. We urge you to participate in this national event and help fight the opioid epidemic. Starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 2:00 p.m. on April 27, 2019, the first twenty people to drop off unused prescription drugs at the Madison Police Station will receive a free "Hand It In" t-shirt and have the opportunity to learn more about the dangers of opioid addiction. M.A.D.E. has generously donated drug lock boxes that will also be available at this event.
If you do not have transportation, please contact the Madison Police Department at 203.245.2721, and an officer will come to your home to pick up your unused prescriptions.
We hope that you will join us in creating a safe, drug-free community. Class Council thanks you for supporting this worthy initiative.
