Dear Daniel Hand Parents and Guardians:
Please be aware that the CIAC has just CANCELLED all of the remaining State tournaments including Basketball, Hockey, Swimming, Cheerleading, and Unified Basketball due to mounting concerns about the covid-19 virus. As many of you know, we currently have teams that were still competing in these tournaments. This was a decision that was made at the State level in the "best interest of the health and safety of our student athletes."
The official CIAC statement is: "The decision was made in light of discussions with numerous agencies and considering the circumstances of our member schools, our championship venues, and weighing the health and safety of our student-athletes, parents, and fans given the uncertainty that surrounds the spread of this virus."
Clearly, we are extremely disappointed and concerned for our athletes, coaches, and fans. They all have worked so hard preparing for these tournaments and this is a very difficult situation for them to understand and bear.
I ask that parents please be cognizant of any students who may be experiencing difficulties and encourage family conversation about empathy and handling difficult life situations. While I understand that this is a small percentage of our entire student population who are directly affected, there are a large number of friends and classmates who will be indirectly concerned. We will encourage students having difficulties to meet with their counselors and coaches.
At this time the changes and cancellations are only affecting the Winter Sports tournaments. No changes have been made at this time to the upcoming spring seasons. The school administration will work to keep parents informed about any new or additional information in a timely manner and will always be able to answer any questions that you may have.
Sincerely,
Craig W. Semple
