Dear members of the Class of 2021 and parents/guardians:
It was great to see so many members of the senior class at orientation the past two days! I look forward to working with your class this year. Prior to the start of school on Thursday (Cohort A) and Friday (Cohort B) of this week I want to highlight several key reminders from Mr. Salutari's presentation:
- On Thursday, September 3, only Cohort A students will attend in-person classes and on Friday, September 4, only Cohort B students will attend in-person classes. Both days will begin with a brief PAW meeting (review your PAW location as many have changed since last year – they will be posted throughout the building). Seniors, who requested a Chromebook, will receive it in PAW. Teachers will distribute updated schedules and collect signed forms that were distributed during orientation. Remote learners will join classes on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.
- Students are required to wear a mask on campus and while inside the school's East and West buildings. Masks must cover your nose and chin.
- Maintaining a social distance of 6 feet at all times is expected when feasible.
- Follow the signage inside the building and utilize the map you received at orientation which highlights one-direction hallways and stairwells.
- Students are expected to bring the desk shields they will receive on their first day in the building to and from school and to place them on their classroom desks as well as in front of them while eating lunch.
- Students attending school in-person may eat lunch in the Dining and Assembly Hall or outside under the tents, while practicing social distancing. To purchase meals in the Dining and Assembly Hall this year you will need to use your student ID as the cafeteria will not accept cash. Please click on the Food Service button on the bottom of the page for more information.
- Students are encouraged to use the automatic hand sanitizer dispensers, located in each classroom, and to bring a water bottle to school that they may refill using the touchless water dispensers that are located throughout the building.
- If you drive to school make sure to park your vehicle in a white-lined space. Yellow lined spaces are reserved for DHHS and Polson faculty and staff.
- If you receive a ride to school follow the traffic pattern outlined in Mr. Salutari's August 27th eNotify - Use the DHHS driveway and have the driver drop you off alongside the athletic storage shed. From there follow the sidewalk to the main entrance of the building.
- As the second week of school is only 4 school days in length, Cohort A will attend school on Tuesday & Wednesday, September 8 & 9, and Cohort B will attend school on Thursday & Friday, September 10 & 11. Remote learners will join classes starting on September 8.
- When attending school remotely all learners are expected to log into their Google Classroom at the start of the period and to be visibly present (video must be on) for the entirety of the lesson, or you will be marked absent.
- The DHHS Code of Conduct is to be followed at all times whether attending school in-person or remotely.
- During PAW on September 8 (Cohort A) and September 10 (Cohort B) students are reminded to return all required forms to their PAW teachers.
- For the first two weeks of school all students must leave campus at 2 PM with the exception of students attending Period 7 music classes.
- Athletic coaches will communicate their practice schedules and start times with athletes.
I look forward to working with all of you and our faculty to make this a memorable year. While none of us can predict with certainty what the school year may look like, I am confident that as individuals and as a group you will persevere and experience success as you have in the past. Build from your achievements and learn from your struggles and failures. As you begin this memorable year in your life set realistic and achievable goals for yourself and persistently work towards achieving them. There is no substitute for hard work. Most importantly, appreciate your time together and support and encourage one another through these challenging times.
As you return to school, together with Mr. Salutari and Mrs. Whitcher, I want to encourage you to continue to engage in respectful dialogue with your peers and teachers. In your time at Hand, this approach has positively impacted classroom discourse. Regardless of whether or not we agree with one another, our community learns and grows stronger when we listen to one another and consider new, or oppositional, thoughts and ideas to our own.
Do not hesitate to reach out to myself, your teachers, or your counselor if we may be of assistance in any way.
Lastly, continue to make healthy decisions and encourage others to do the same.
Go tigers!
Mr. Bodner
