Dear Jeffrey School Families,
I have thought often of Becky Frost's communication to families on the second day of school titled "Grace." That communication resonated with me on many levels, perhaps no more so than today, as I prepare to fill the very large shoes left by Becky Frost.
Today marks the official start date of my Interim Principal position. I was able to spend time with Mrs. Frost before she left, and I was also able to spend some time with Mr. Bodner before my official start date. What is eminently clear in every transition observation and conversation I have had is that the staff here at JES are compassionate, intelligent, professional, and dedicated: in short, amazing. Their expertise and experience will be invaluable to me as I transition to the interim position. Additionally, it was clear that the faculty and staff at Jeffrey School admire the families that are part of the school community and are committed to working collaboratively to assure the best experience for every child in their care.
Over the coming weeks and months, as we get to know each other, I may need your "grace" as I navigate the systems and routines that define Jeffrey School. While I would love to say I will hit the ground running, the reality is I will hit the ground walking, learning from staff and families about what it means to be a part of the team at Jeffrey School. Becky Frost has been and continues to be incredibly supportive during this transition - ensuring I have everything I need. With that knowledge, know that any mistakes or oversights fall squarely on my shoulders.
When I retired one short year ago, the world of teaching and learning looked very different - as you know all too well. Having spent 25 years at Brown School here in Madison in the roles of library media specialist, language arts department head, assistant principal, and principal, I retired never imagining how things would change in one year. However, I am excited to rejoin the district and join JES for the first time. I had been thoroughly enjoying retirement, but when I learned of an interim position at Jeffrey School, I was excited to come back, due to the outstanding reputation and positive school culture and climate that you have all helped shape.
I have long believed that there is no job more challenging (and rewarding, depending on the day!) than parenting. I appreciate the support you have provided to the staff at JES as they recently transitioned to an "all in" school model, and I appreciate your flexibility as plans have been adjusted. Most importantly, I appreciate the support you provide to your children so that they can be successful and love school, whether they are learning from home or inside the school building.
I look forward to sharing our time together for the next few months. I can be reached via school email: phelpsj@madison.k12.ct.us or by calling the main office: 203.245.6460.
Sincerely,
Julie Phelps
