The Seal of Biliteracy
We are very pleased to implement the Seal of Biliteracy this year at Daniel Hand High School. The Seal of Biliteracy is a seal affixed to the high school diploma and indicated on the transcript attesting to a student's proficiency in two or more languages. It is awarded to students who complete all English requirements for graduation AND achieve intermediate proficiency in another language via a proficiency test. The proficiency tests will be administered in March 2022. More information about these tests will be provided in the near future. Please note that there are no costs to students interested in this opportunity.
Who should register to test for the Seal of Biliteracy?
- Students in grades 11-12 who reach year 5 of French or Spanish, year
4 of Mandarin, or year 3 of Latin.
- Heritage speakers in grades 11-12 who may or may not be taking
language courses at DHHS and who speak/listen and read/write in the
target language.
- Languages offered include Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish.
- If a student speaks a language other than those listed above, a test may still be available. On the registration form, please mark "Other" and the name of the language to see if a test is available.
- Juniors who are registered to take an AP test in a World Language in
May 2022 should not register to test for the Seal of Biliteracy because
achieving a score of 3 or higher on the AP test will qualify for the Seal
AND potentially for college credit.
- In the event that a junior does not score a 3 on an AP test, they will have the opportunity to take a different proficiency test during senior year to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy.
- Seniors who are registered to take an AP test in a World Language in
May 2022 should register to test for the Seal of Biliteracy because AP
scores will not be returned prior to graduation.
- Seniors who achieved a 3 or higher on an AP world language test last
year have already met the requirements for the Seal of Biliteracy and
should not register for an additional proficiency test.
Students who would like to register to test for the Seal of Biliteracy should complete a registration form by Friday, February 4, 2022 using the following link (only one per student, please).
