DHHS Updates
Good afternoon Daniel Hand High School community:
Spring Fling (Homecoming)
As a reminder, the Spring Fling is scheduled in the Dining and Assembly Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2022. All Daniel Hand students are invited and encouraged to attend this event. Tickets must be purchased in advance (electronically) of the event. I am excited that we are able to offer this for all members of our student body. With that being said, we are hoping for only positive memories and ask that all parents/guardians speak with their student(s) prior to their attendance at the Spring Fling. Some important topics to discuss at anytime with high school age students include; refraining from drug and alcohol use, consent as it pertains to intimacy and/or sexual activity, refraining from aggressive and/or unsafe behavior(s) including operating a motor vehicle, and how to contact a parent/guardian if an unsafe/uncomfortable situation arises before, during, or after this or any event. This Spring Fling will be chaperoned by DHHS faculty and staff including the administration.
PTO
The last DHHS PTO meeting of the year is on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. The agenda and Zoom link for the meeting will be sent to the school community on Sunday afternoon. Please consider attending this meeting if your schedule allows.
Wednesday, May 4, 2022 – N.G.S.S. Assessment
In November 2015, the Connecticut State Department of Education (C.S.D.E.) adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (N.G.S.S.). With this curriculum adoption, a state-wide assessment was put in place. Participation in this assessment is required for all students in Grades 5, 8, and 11. All students in Grade 11 will take the N.G.S.S. Assessment on Wednesday, May 4. Similar to the SAT school day assessment, the N.G.S.S. Assessment will only be administered via a school-issued Chromebook. All juniors must bring their fully charged Chromebook to school on Wednesday, May 4. On this day, all students in Grade 11 will take the N.G.S.S. Assessment during periods 1 and 2, therefore they will be excused from their period 1 and 2 classes. Following the completion of the test, students in Grade 11 will follow their period 3 – 6 schedule as normal. All freshman, sophomores, and seniors are expected to report to school on this day and follow their normal schedule.
Wellness Wednesday
Due to NGSS and AP testing, Wellness Wednesday will not be scheduled next week.
Class of 2022 – College/Future Plans Announcement Day
Seniors are typically invited to have a photo taken while wearing their college/university attire on the first Monday in May. If a student is not attending college or is undecided of future plans, they are still invited/encouraged to participate in this event – they may elect to wear DHHS gear. Many seniors have not yet or just decided their post-high school plans. As a result, we are delaying this event until mid-May. An E-Notify will be sent to the Class of 2022 as soon as a date is determined. This information is being sent to students so they can plan accordingly for this event.
Hands-On Stage
DHHS's very own Hands-On Stage is holding auditions for their annual STAR Play! The Student Theatre Arts Repertoire Play is a great opportunity for students to get involved in a student-run theater production where they get to put on a play about an important social issue! Auditions for this year's play are this Monday, May 2nd from 5:00 - 6:00 pm on the stage! For more information reach out to the student directors Sylvia Sonenstein and Rebe Wahl.
As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Enjoy the remainder of the day and the weekend.
Stay healthy,
Mr. Salutari
