Numerous members of our school community have regularly discussed the importance of social and emotional health and well-being, especially during these unprecedented times. I am sure many of you would agree that the impact of Covid-19 on our schools has been overwhelming. This year is like no other and many have been affected by the stress and pressure of teaching and learning in the Covid-19 environment. I have been working closely with our school counselors and support staff to create a plan that focuses on supporting students and staff. Our support staff recently met with our entire student body in small group settings. During these meetings, students were given the opportunity to share their input specific to some of the challenges/stressors they are facing this year. The themes from the small group meetings were similar across the grade levels and are listed below in no particular order:
- Learning in the online environment is difficult.
- The workload can be overwhelming.
- It is difficult to develop relationships with teachers due to less time in-person and the wearing of masks.
To begin addressing some of these concerns, we will begin piloting "Wellness Wednesdays" on Wednesday, November 11, 2020. The schedule that will be followed on these days is detailed below. I plan to discuss the pilot program in detail during P.T.O. meeting on November 10, 2020. A recording of the P.T.O. meeting will be sent electronically to the school community soon after the meeting. If you cannot attend this month's meeting, I hope you take the opportunity to view the recording.
I am excited to implement our Wellness Wednesdays' initiative next week as I believe our approach will support students, staff, and faculty. I am looking forward to sharing additional information about this pilot program on an ongoing basis. Finally, and for your information, the support staff will be now be available virtually before and after school for all students. Students interested in joining these sessions can do so via Google Meet using the code, supportstaff, during the hours of 7:00 -7:30 a.m. and/or 2:00 - 2:30p.m.
