Jeffrey Grade 1 Students Enjoy ‘Book Tasting’
January 29, 2020 - First grade students at Jeffrey Elementary School had a special trip to the school library this week. Students enjoyed a “book tasting”, an event designed to help students explore new non-fiction topics.
Librarian Mrs. Fayan transformed the library in a library café for the event. Students were given sheets of paper with the image of a plate on it and invited to move around four tables of books on display. Each table offered a selection of non-fiction books according to a particular category: transportation, science, animals, and surprises.
Students looked at the books on the table and then filled their “plate” with books and topics they might want to learn more about.
“Today we are inviting you to the library to taste some different kinds of non-fiction books,” Mrs. Fayan told students. “You might find something that you hadn’t even thought of before, find it really interesting, and then want to know more.
Students are currently studying non-fiction in their classrooms as part of the Grade 1 English Language Arts Unit 3 Reading and Writing curriculum.
