Polson Career Day 2023

Polson’s grade 8 Career Day kicked off with a panel presentation from area college coaches: Andy Shay Men’s Lacrosse at Yale, Chris Potter Men’s Hockey at Wesleyan, Will Porter Women’s Crew at Yale, and Jen Lane Softball at Wesleyan. In addition to sharing the path to their careers, all four coaches reinforced some key attributes that coaches look for in their players: leadership, receptivity to feedback and resilience to failure, kindness, manners, teamwork, and most importantly, time management. (Students won’t soon forget the story about the player who was kicked off the team for being late to the first practice!) Thanks, coaches, for sharing your insights with us.

The day continued with students going to several career presentations that included the owner of the Legacy Theatre, a plant engineer from a power generating station, a firefighter/paramedic, a Yale scientist, an interior designer from Maggie’s of Madison, and employees of Double Diamond Painting, Branford Compassion Club, and Action Sports. Students also got a glimpse into filling out a job application and interview skills. Overall, it was a great opportunity for our students to meet successful business people and jumpstart their own thinking about their futures.
