Calling all leaders, thinkers, and change makers! Do you want to learn about social issues while helping your community? What about speaking your mind about the world? If so, join Be The Change! Be The Change is a student-led and focused group for students in grades 6-8 who want to learn about new social issues while educating others. Each month, the group will choose a new topic. Once we have done enough research and have a good understanding of the issue and what can be done to combat it, the group will take action and design a solution to be implemented at Polson or in the community. Topics will be chosen by the students, for example, food waste, cultural discrimination, plastic pollution, etc.. Projects could include PSA videos, posters, organizing school awareness days, and anything in between. Interest in the arts, social media, filming, research, and public speaking will be used, but all are welcome!

Connecticut History Day is a program for students in grades 6-12 that encourages exploration of local, state, national, and world history. After selecting a historical topic that relates to this year’s annual theme of Breaking Barriers, participants will conduct extensive research using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews. Students will then analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topic's significance in history, and create a final project. These projects will be entered into a series of competitions, from the local to the national level, where professional historians and educators evaluate them. Connecticut History Day is one of 58 affiliate programs of the highly regarded National History Day program.
Participating students will meet once a week to plan, prepare, discuss, and visit the local historical archive to develop a project for the competition. Students may work independently, with a partner or in a small group. Participants get to choose their topic and how to present it! Presentation options include creating a documentary, a paper, an exhibit, a performance or a website. After school meetings will be lessons and workshops for students to become familiar and follow the four-step inquiry process to develop their project. Additional time beyond the after school sessions will be necessary to complete the project. All students will present their projects on Saturday, March 28th in New Haven at the Connecticut History Day Regional competition. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend on competition day and transportation will be provided from Polson.
